How Does A DCT Work?

Unlike an automatic transmission, the DCT clutches operate automatically. A Hyundai dual-clutch transmission is essentially two gearboxes controlled by a sophisticated network of computers, electronics, and hydraulics, which allow your Hyundai to shift gears without disrupting the power flow from the engine to the transmission. As a result, you will notice much smoother and quicker gear shifts and improved fuel economy for your Hyundai model. Review more Hyundai dual-clutch transmission facts below.

Know This About Your DCT

  • If you hear clicking noises when you turn your ignition on and off, or when you shift your Hyundai into Drive or Reverse, this is a normal occurrence for the DCT.
  • Your Hyundai dual-clutch transmission clutches are moved by a high-speed reversible motor. You might hear a slight hum as the motor works, which is normal.
  • The Hill-start Assist Control feature is there to help you when you encounter a steep incline. If you let off the brake pedal, your Hyundai will remain where it is for about two seconds and then activate “creep mode” which may cause you to start rolling backward. This could potentially damage your clutch, so always use the foot brake until you are ready to accelerate on a hill.
  • View the indicator lamp in the center of your instrument cluster on the dashboard that displays your gear shift position. This display will blink if your clutch is overheating and the DCT clutch will automatically release to prevent damage. In this case, apply the foot brake and wait a few minutes before driving again to prevent transmission damage.
